Introduction to American Politics introduces students to the basic concepts of American politics, including its classical roots and theoretical basis, the Constitution, the three branches of government, civil liberties, public policy, the mass media, and foreign policy.  At the conclusion, students apply their understanding of the theories to specific current problems.

After completing this course, students should be able to

  • Summarize the circumstances involved in the founding of the United States Government, including the principle of Separation of Powers and Checks and Balances
  • Define Federalism
  • Identify the branches of the Federal Government, including the structures, functions, and current leaders
  • Differentiate between Civil Rights and Civil Liberties within the context of the Bill of Rights and the remaining Amendments to the Constitution
  • Evaluate the role media, public opinion, and interest groups play in shaping policy
  • Outline how former and current political parties in the United States shape(d) government
  • Illustrate the Progressive Movement’s influence on voting and participation
  • Analyze the importance of citizens in the functioning of Federal, State, and local Governments
