This course provides an overview of bilingual education to include the history, policies, programs, and research on effective bilingual education programs.  Language acquisition theories, the role of primary language literacy in second language acquisition, second language instruction in bilingual settings and methods for teaching English as a Second Language (ESL), and content area instruction through English Language Development (ELD) techniques will be emphasized. This course will also provide students with opportunities to explore tools for communicating effectively with speakers of a language other than English and will help students to increase their level of awareness, knowledge, and skills that will render them more effective teachers with culturally diverse students and families.
